Could It Be Racist: The Apu Controversy
By Lynn
On Sundays episode of The Simpsons “No Good Read Goes Unpublished” the show addressed the problem with Apu.
What is the problem with Apu? Well, comedian Hari Kondablou and his documentary “The Problem With Apu” and his argument of how Apu represents a negative stereotype of South Asian identity, helping create a negative view of the identity. Of course the SJW battalion have agreed this is a terrible portrayal and must be retired, not only that, but a heartfelt apology must be in order.
I mean, I know when I see The Simpsons, I obviously expect to see extreme politically correct material and an accurate portrayal of how an absolute “normal” family is to behave.
It’s a fuckin comedy…
It’s a fuckin cartoon…
Grow the fuck up…
Here is the problem. All of this censorship and apologizing for what some deem unfunny is going to straight up kill comedy. Racial stereotypes are funny. They are not racist. There are obvious truths to stereotypes, which is why they exist. To poke fun at them and have a good laugh is pretty much all one can do. Have you seen a stand up from a black comedian in the last 20 years? No, well you’re probably racist… If so, then you can attest to the comedian using every effort to get a laugh at the expense of their own stereotype. Huge dicks, running away from child support, baby momma drama, chicken, going to choich, hood stuff, robbing people, getting they ass beat by police, did I mention chicken? A stereotype is just something the majority can share together and if they haven’t had a firsthand experience, then at least they have probably witnessed such stereotypical behavior from someone close to them. I guess I’m not allowed to think this way because I am white. Where my racial stereotypes include graduating high school, tipping anyone who offers or helps me with a service, knowing how to file and pay my taxes and getting off with a warning during traffic stops because I was respectful to the officer like both my parents taught me to be…
Now The Simpsons must take responsibilities for their actions! Here is what happened instead: On Sundays episode in a small scene where Marge reads to Lisa her “favorite book ever.” The story contains racial stereotyping and Mare is disturbed by the references and while reading replaces the storylines with more “politically-correct” material, even adding a cisgender protagonist.
Lisa then tells her mom that rewriting the tale is pointless. Marge then asks “What is she supposed to do?” Lisa then looks to the fourth wall and addresses the viewer “It’s hard to say. Something that started decades ago and was applauded and inoffensive is now politically incorrect. What can you do?” Lisa then looks over to a framed picture of Apu on a nightstand with the caption “Don’t have a cow. Apu.” Marge enters the frame and states to the audience “Some things will be dealt with at a later date.” Lisa then says “If at all.”
Now let the rage pour! Not only did this response not give into the stupid SJW pandering, but the show used Lisa (the most thoughtful and liberal character) to deliver the message. Let’s just say butts where hurt, a damn near full meltdown from some. Like people were betrayed by their favorite and most influential cartoon character of all time… Apu. “I mean, Apu IS my favorite cartoon character of all time!” – No one ever
Apu is certainly a character, but He has also been given more in almost thirty years than just the Kwik-E-Mart and curry jokes. He has successfully had a career as a business owner, along with many other side careers that all help provide for his family. Which have come about after discussing the pros and cons of arranged marriage and even a struggle with fertility. His character will occasionally have a brief lesson in Indian religion as well? Vishnu, Ganesh, and Shiva have all been mentioned on the Simpsons, usually with Homer getting an appropriate smiting for not treating them with respect. But one “come again!” in an Indian accent and we are all racists…
Anyway, good for you Simpsons! Obviously, just do you. I mean you have been on the air since 1989 and Matt Groening is worth an estimated 500 million… So Hari Kondablou and the pissy, purpled haired, 300+ pound SJWs can all suck on that.
What do you think? How should the creators and writers of the show have responded in your opinion?
